Changing seasons

September is one of my favorite times on the farm. The weather is starting to cool down and the workload is getting ever so slightly less overwhelming. During the height of summer, we have multiple crops, including tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, and zucchini, that have to be harvested many times each week. They are harvested so heavily for several reasons. First of all, each of the crops grow fast enough that if left to harvest only once a week, there would be tons that were oversized and thus unsellable. Additionally, harvesting these plants regularly tells them to keep producing more, therefore enabling us to get the most out of each bed.

In addition to the above autumn-related improvements, the most exciting for me is that all of my favorite cool-season crops are coming back into season! This week, we’ll have the much-anticipated return of both radishes and head lettuce, along with the first of the fall beets, baby kale, and maybe even some scallions. In the coming weeks, we’ll start to have salad turnips as well as kohlrabi, cabbage, and traditional turnips. Check out the full harvest list below and we’ll see you this weekend!

Glad things are starting to slow, even the tiniest bit. Very happy to hear about the return of radishes & head
lettuce; hope its the small ones I love! That multi week harvest, though time consuming, does help w/
increased yield of very popular crops. I am looking forward to returning to all those fall specials.
