Fall veggies

We did end up having several light frosts last week as temperatures dipped into the mid-to-low thirties for three nights in a row, a true rarity for mid-September! However, most of the warm-weather crops survived the shock to varying degrees. The basil, which is one of the most cold-sensitive crops we grow, experienced some noticeable damage. Mike pruned off the affected areas last week, so it will be a wait-and-see game before we know if there will be enough regrowth and recovery for harvest this week. The tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant, all of which are quite tall at this point, were largely unaffected by the light ground-level frosts. Even the zucchini, which grows much closer to the ground, seems to have provided enough protection to the fruit with its large leaves that no adverse effects were observable.

At this time of year, however, we are moving more and more away from heat-loving crops and into those that can handle or even benefit from cool and cold temperatures. Many fall crops actually become sweeter as the temperatures drop and the plants begin to increase the sugar content in their water-transport system to act as a natural antifreeze. This week, we will have more kohlrabi, as well as the first of the fall spinach. We will begin harvesting our second variety of fall cabbage and purple-topped turnips and cauliflower will also be becoming ready in the coming weeks!

The online store will be open, as always, from noon until midnight on Thursday. Thank you so much for you support!

Very glad you missed the hard frost. Looking forward to spinach once again. I am really enjoying
the okra. Thanks so much for those recipes. I think this is your first year to do cauli? Well, I’m
glad to see that. Have a good week.

So interesting about the increased sweetness of the plants. This weather is confounding, but you are persevering and the produce delicious. We are still enjoying our “haul” from a week ago! And looking forward to turnips and cauliflower in the coming weeks, and more!
