Heat wave!

  • Wow, what a scorcher this week has been! With temperatures up near 100 several days this week and the humidity just about maxed out, we had to limit our working hours to mornings and evenings several days as the midday heat was too dangerous to be out in. Unfortunately, even as the heat kept us indoors, the plants and weeds keep growing, meaning we’ll likely have to work through somewhat of a backlog of tasks next week. The tomatoes have been growing like crazy in the field and we’ve gotten a few of the first ripe outdoor cherry tomatoes this week, which means in a week or two we should start having more and more tomatoes at market! Other summer crops are starting to produce as well. We’ll have a greater number of eggplant this week as well as the first poblano peppers from the hoop house.

The other big work of the week was the beginning of the garlic harvest. We devised a hanging method to dry the garlic on the front porch, but will start bringing fresh, uncured garlic (my favorite kind!) to market this weekend. The weather looks like it’s going to cool off and be lovely for the markets this weekend, so be sure to stop by! Check out our full harvest list below and we’ll see you at the market!

So glad a break in the weather is coming. Tomatoes and garlic sound fabulous. Good luck at the markets this weekend (we are in Canada and it is hot here, too)—we are thinking of you!

I’m glad you’re being careful in this heat. Must be difficult to go back out at night but its the best choice for now.
The list of produce is just incredible. The growing never stops, that’s for sure. Looking forward to a nicer weekend.
