This has been the hottest summers we’ve had since starting the farm and it has also been an overall very dry year. After the first year and a half, where we had record rainfalls, we’ve received very little rain since last fall. Fortunately, most of our plants growing right now are those that we can easily irrigate. We use drip irrigation tubing, which lies directly on top of the soil and delivers a slow drip of water to the ground. This not only provides the plants with the water they need, but also helps keep the leaves dry, which is an important tool in preventing foliar diseases.
One of the other challenges with the incredibly hot weather is the fact that, when we both need to work at the same time in the cool of the morning and evening, that also means our son needs to be out there with us (as opposed to our usual schedule where one of us works while the other takes care of him.) Fortunately, Caleb is old enough now to help with a variety of farm chores, including bean harvesting, which he has really taken to. He did a fabulous job helping me harvest the purple pole beans on Monday morning. These beans, incidentally, are one of my favorite crops. They are a very old heirloom variety and I find have a much fuller and richer taste than standard green beans. I’ve been growing them for year and they’ve always been a stand-out in both flavor and production.
See below for our full harvest list. The online store will be open from noon until midnight on Thursday!

July 21, 2020Wish we could send you a quarter of our rainfall. We had rainfall almost daily, the full month of May. June was less than normal and now July is the deluge once again…normal rainy season stuff! So so sorry to miss y’all this summer – next year for sure, when Covid is a thing of the past Hopefully!
