As my son so accurately put it last week, this is the time of year when we start getting ready for next season. In the past week, we have planted the garlic that will be harvested next summer, ordered next year’s seeds, sterilized all of the seed starting trays in preparation for use in 2022, and are generally working our way through the farm preparing each bed for winter depending on what will be planted in it in the coming season and when. After the excessively cold weather last week, temperatures have bounced back up and we’re getting to enjoy several beautiful days to work through some of these end-of-season tasks. I always find warmer fall weather more welcome after first getting a taste of some true cold!
The freezes last week were unusually heavy for the first of the season. Usually we get one or two light frosts in advance of the true killing freeze, but this year, the first frost of the year was the death knell for all of the summer crops, which can’t withstand sub-zero temperatures. However, the cooler season crops are all well adapted to surviving cold temperatures, so despite multiple nights in the 20s, we still have spinach, kale, chard, salad mix, radishes, and several other crops happily growing in the field.
This week’s harvest list is below. We look forward to seeing you at the markets!

November 9, 2021Too bad Leigh isn’t here to help w/that garlic since she loves it so much. I remember helping plant garlic w/a CSA I
was in afew years back. It was actually just down the road from your farm! I agree that is is so nice to have some
warm days after some really cold ones. Its so appreciated. Very glad to see that small farmer out there in the fields!
Have a great week.
