Moving into summer

The up and down weather we’ve experienced all season has made our harvesting less predictable than usual. We plant beds so that when one crop is just ending, a new one is just beginning and generally this works out surprisingly well. This year, however, some things are ahead of schedule and others behind, making the transition from crop to crop less on schedule that we would hope! However, the summer crops seem to be gradually coming into their own despite several fairly chilly stretches since they were planted in mid-May. There are a plethora of green tomatoes on the plants, which are about 4 feet tall at this point. The beans in the field are finally flowering and the cucumbers and zucchini are producing more every day.

This year we’re growing a new variety of cucumber in our hoop house called “Minime.” This petite, smooth-skinned variety is a real gourmet treat and are perfect for snacking! See below for this week’s harvest list and we’ll see you at the markets!

That is an awesome photo of that cicada peering out from those veggie leaves. Poor guy, probably one of
the last of his brood still cruising. We are so excited about the new cuccs this season. Very glad the
weather variations haven’t been too much of an issue. This cooler weather is certainly a surprise. Sure
hope we don’t repeat the 28 straight days of +90 degrees we experienced last summer!
