Seeing Spring

It’s been lovely watching spring begin to cautiously peak its head around the corner. With the recent warmer temperatures, our garlic has popped above its layer of straw mulch and the hay field next door has turned from a determined winter brown to a startling green.

As more and more hints appear that winter’s end is not too far off, our preparatory work is drawing to an end and the real growing season is more and more upon us. We do, of course, still have a few tasks to complete that fit more into the “farm set up” category. One of the big projects that had been looming over us since we moved here was cleaning up the long-neglected row of pine trees that separates our property from our neighbor’s. It seemed like such an overwhelming task that even machinery-averse me was voting that we get a chain saw for the job. However, Mike decided it was worth having an initial go with just an axe and yesterday he turned what was a messy tangle of dead branches on the lower 10 feet of nearly twenty trees into a beautiful, healthy-looking line of pines. Now instead of looking at a bunch of gnarly branches, we have a view right through the trees and over the hay field next door all the way to the mountains on the other side of the Shenandoah River.

Additionally, over the next few weeks, we will be working to install our walk-in refrigerator so as to be ready for our market season. And on that note, we have an exciting farm update! We have been accepted to the Burke Farmers Market in Fairfax County Virginia. The market runs every Saturday from 8am-noon starting April 14. Click here to visit our farm website and learn more and we hope to see you there!

Mike is awesome! That must have been a really labor intensive job. Hope Caleb got his break for lunch!
I know you’re loving that view. Congrats again on the market. They are very lucky to have you.

This is all incredibly exciting. Your progress in such a short time is inspiring, and I am eager to see the Shenandoah from your farm. Congrats on all you are doing and your acceptance into the Burke Farmer’s market! We will be sure to make it a trip this season, and to tell our Northern Virginia friends.
