We’re in the midst of a seemingly endless wave of summer heat and doing our best to work in the cooler hours of the morning and evening whenever possible. With the increased heat comes other changes as well. The level and type of pest pressure starts to shift as we enter real summer weather. Colorado Potato Beetles, which despite their name tend to be more of an issue with us on eggplant rather than potatoes, are coming into their element as one of the most unpleasant-looking bugs of the season! Their small white larvae eat in groups and can decimate an eggplant leave in a surprisingly short period of time. Tomato hornworms begin to make their presence known as well. These caterpillars are not only pretty neat looking but can grow to be truly enormous and can have a correspondingly big effect on tomato and pepper plants as they chomp through leaves and stems.
Still, it’s all part of a day’s work on a farm and even as pest pressure is increasing, so are the number of summer crops. We are starting to see ripening begin on some of the tomatoes and expect to have a harvestable amount of these in the next few weeks! This will be our second week for eggplant, of which we are growing three varieties this year- traditional dark purple, lighter pinkish-purple, and a new striped white and purple variety we’re excited to try.
Thank you as always for your support. The online store will be open this Thursday from noon until midnight!

July 13, 2020Oh my gosh, good luck with the potato beetles and hornworms. You guys are like superheroes battling the dark forces around each corner, but persevering with incredible success. We are excited to visit your store this week and plan for all the good veggies we’ll enjoy!

July 13, 2020Those Colorado beetles sound nasty. Do you have to hand pick them off? Tomato hornworms, I agree,
are pretty cool looking. Maybe you could post a pic next week. Everyone is always asking about
tomatoes so even a hint of ripeness beginning is exciting for all! Glad to see you’ve got some cooler
nights this week, though the days are awfully hot. Plan on a dip in the pool at the end of the day with or
without the dog!!
