We’re back into lows in the 30s, so instead of planting the summer crops this week, we’re transporting them inside most nights to keep them warm and protected until the weather warms up again! We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this is the last true cold snap and that we’ll be able to begin on the summer planting this coming weekend. After several fairly dry weeks, we had plenty of rain over the last week and even had a scare over the weekend with a brief hail storm. Fortunately, the hail was so soft that it caused only minimal damage to the crops, which was a huge relief given the devastation that hail usually results in.
With the jumps up and down in temperatures, some of our crops are a little behind where they usually are. We experienced some fairly extension damage to a few varieties of kale due to inclement weather the week after they were planted. Now, they finally seem to be catching back up (for the most part), so we’re hoping for an increase in the kale harvest over the next couple of weeks. We’re also hoping to bring in some of the first rainbow chard and kohlrabi this weekend, fingers crossed. The garlic (pictured above) is the biggest we’ve ever had at this time of year, meaning that garlic scapes could be early this year, so keep your eyes out for those in the coming weeks!
Below is this week’s harvest list. We look forward to seeing you all at Burke and Shepherdstown this weekend!

May 10, 2021That is some big garlic, having seen it first hand this past week. Enjoyed pulling the last of the green garlic
& seeing the incredible wealth of varieties you guys are growing. I know how difficult it is to carry those
summer crops back & forth w/this annoying weather so hope it levels out soon. Really looking forward to
the chard & kohlrabi.
